The 808 Experiment: Vol 3, Coming Soon…a brief look at the history of the series

We will be announcing The 808 Experiment: Vol 3 line-up in the next 7 days… So before we do, lets take a look back and see what this project is all about.

What is The 808 Experiment?
The 808 Experiment is an annual compilation produced entirely by SMKA. In just three years the series has become a popular, and anticipated, project in the hip-hop community. It has achieved a level of exposure that very few independent projects have been able to accomplish. The strength of the series relies on the depth and range of artists, the quality of music and diversity of sound. The 808 Experiment is an Atlanta centric project that encompasses different genres and regions, and attempts to showcase a cross section of hip-hop each year.

In December 2008, we released our first project ever. It featured a gang of local artists who were making noise throughout Atlanta. The project ended up winning Creative Loafing’s Best Local Mixtape Award, but both the readers and critics, beating out B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray. This project was our introduction to the hip-hop world and allowed us to work with a lot of new artists.

In January 2010, we released The 808 Experiment: Vol 2, which featured a whole new case of artists and attracted other talented artists from cities outside of Atlanta (i.e. Outasight, Tanya Morgan, Nappy Roots…) The project surpassed Vol 1 (in Downloads) in the first Month, and has been downloaded 150,000+ times to date. The project also featured Yelawolf and Pill right as they began their meteoric rise. The project was featured in most major hip-hop sites and received critical acclaim.

…….SOOOO, we will be announcing the cast of close to 40 artists in a few days. There is a deep roster of talented artists this year, and some GREAT music. We try to make the music better every year, and hope people continue to support the series. Stay Tuned

SMKA & Creative Loafing present: Mixt A Vol. 2 – An Atlanta Compilation

When Creative Loafing wanted to put together an Atlanta mixtape compilation, and with their hands full working on the music issue, they hit us up. We reached out to the Atlanta indie music scene and created a compilation that features music from some of Atlanta best underground talent from all different genres. The project has a little something for everyone: hip-hop, funk, rock, metal, alternative and more.

The tape accompanied the CL MUSIC ISSUE, June 2010.

“My aim is to create a movie for your ears. I just want you to become a part of the music so you can feel like I felt when I love emcees for the first time. And people have lost that, in my opinion. There’s just not many artists out there that give you that feeling.”

Known to some for years as an artist with yeoman’s work ethic and a tremendous stage performance, YelaWolf has toiled under the radar for many years before now. From underground and unheard, his music and career have both picked up at a fast clip, thanks to the release of his Trunk Muzik mixtape. A mix of brash honesty and artistry paired with an eclectic set of influences, both music and cultural, Yela is poised to position himself as one of the new faces and voices from below the Mason-Dixon.

While at SMKA’s The 808 Experience: Vol. 2 release party, our cameras catch up with Wolf. Listen as he speaks on his career before now, the concept for the “Pop The Trunk” video and his goals for 2010.
