SMKA: Produced, Booked, Marketed and Executed the Atlanta Stargazing Tour

The highly successful mini-tour took place in Atlanta during the summer of 2010. Co presented by Whynatte, the AST sold out nearly all of the venues and created a live an unique environment for music. Throughout the summer thousands of different people attended the tour.

A traditional “Stargazing Tour,” consists of touring the night sky looking at the stars from different landmarks. The Atlanta Stargazing Tour is slightly different. The AST is a summer concert series that takes place at 6 different, and unique, locations throughout Atlanta. The focus of the AST is to showcase Atlanta’s brightest young artists, from various genres, while creating a distinctive and fun atmosphere for a musical performance.

The Atlanta Stargazing Tour, jointly presented by SMKA and Whynatte, is a summer event series that will showcase some of Atlanta’s brightest, most promising talent in an array of genres. The “tour” will consist of six separate shows at venues around Atlanta. the series begins Thursday, July 1st and end Thursday, September 9th. The events will occur roughly two weeks apart, with each taking place at a different location in neighborhoods around Atlanta. In order of first show to last, the locations are: The East Side Lounge, Midtown Tavern, Star Bar, The Glenn Hotel, Park Tavern, and Clermont Lounge.

Each event will feature live performance with a different overall theme and vibe, that best fits the venue. Artists (currently) scheduled to perform include: Killer Mike, Aleon Craft, Nappy Roots, ALIEN WARR, Brittany Bosco, Grip Plyaz, Spree Wilson, Vonnegutt, Jay West, STS, Ocha La Rocha, Weapons of Audio, Playboy Tre, FKi, Sean Falyon, Paper Route Gangstaz, Richelle L. Brown, Niko Villamor, The Soviet Rockets, Smitty & The Spare Change, and Alexandrea Lushington.

The support and community involvement surrounding this series has been phenomenal. A long list of local companies and media outlets have come on board to help support this tour. These companies include: Frank 151/Atlanta Backwoods, Affiliated Digital, Ozone, Creative Loafing, The Smoking Section, Mixtape Atlanta, Fusicology, Ruby Hornet, ChemLab, illRoots, Dustin Chambers, Chilly-0, Guerrilla Minds, Esperanza-ATL, Mindzai, 4th Ward Heroes, Jenesis Magazine, Kevin Nottingham and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

“In a city called the Mecca of southern Hip-Hop, it seems every year a handful of indie emcees begin to grab the eyes of many Hip-Hop heads all over the world. Hosted by Atlanta producers SMKA, The Atlanta Stargazing Tour gave Hip-Hop lovers a chance to see many of Atlanta’s and other state’s best indie artists, as well as the possible next big faces in Hip-Hop.

On the third night of the tour, the Five Star Bar in Little Five Points was not ready for the show that was about to happen. Opening up with the blindfolded Alienwarr (Aleon Craft’s drummer), War got the crowd hyped for the show by jamming out to some of the classic tracks of the South while throwing sticks, playing backwards, and even playing on top of the drums. (Did I mention he was blindfolded?)

Some of today’s rising artists such as HaZIQ aLI, Stanza, Jarren Benton, and Sean Falyon got the emcee performances underway and definitely grabbed the crowds attention with hype production and dope lyricism. With all three emcees giving the crowd a gratifying introduction to the show, the good folks at the Star Bar were well prepared when Kyle Lucas hit the stage. Backed by the band Vonnegut who you might have heard off of Big Boi’s latest album, Lucas performed some obvious crowd favorites, as the women screamed for Lucas and Vonnegut during their whole 30 minute set.

Leaving the crowd amped and ready for more, Atlanta native STS (Sugar Tongue Slim) hit the stage for the first time in his hometown. Fresh off the Roots new album, STS wowed the crowed with tracks from his Demand More 2 mixtape and his new EP Sole Muisc.

With the show moving on, the next Atlanta emcee to bring heat was Atlanta Indie front runner Grip Plyaz. Jamming off his EP Purp Wind and Fire Vol 1., Grip brought both the loud bass banging production and the raw lyrics that Atlanta music is known for. Leaving the crowd jumping and bucking, Grip was the perfect set up to bring in the main man himself Aleon Craft.

Accompanied by his three beautiful back up singers Aleon Craft took the whole building to another level, as he performed songs from his solo mixtapes, to some classic Backwudz tracks that had even the walls sweating from the heat.

Bringing up Grip Plyaz back on stage to help perform songs like “Donkey Kong,” the two who are no strangers of working with each other like their recent video “Step Out,” had the crowd out of control and the bar erupting. When SMKA joined them on stage with the Georgia Bulldog flag waving and free T-shirts being thrown out, everyone in the place including me realized that this was what made Atlanta music so amazing and made all of us ATLiens proud.
