60 Days ago we launched a Kickstarter Campaign to raise money to produce a high quality album with Detroit artist Young Scolla. With the music industry is currently doing back-flips to sell albums, and the fact very few albums actually re-coup their initial investment (not because people don’t like the music, but because people want music for free and I can’t blame them) so we thought it would be best if we reached out to friends and fans to help support, and fund a project. If there was demand for it, then we would create it. Turns out there was demand for it. 121 ppl donated $4,549 over 60 days.
The campaign ended today March 12th, 2011…and I would like to take this opportunity to THANK all 121 people for helping us reach our goal. THANK YOU!!
Atlanta, March 2nd 2011: Nearly 50 days ago we (SMKA, Young Scolla & Fab 5 Ent.) launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money in order to produce, and release, an independent album. Young Scolla (Det) flew down to Atlanta the first week of January and spent 6 weeks in the studio with SMKA. 808 Blake, of SMKA, and Young Scolla were in the studio 6 days a week for 10+ hours a day working on the album, Young Scolla meets SMKA (untitled).
On March 1st, 2011 we reached our goal of $4,000 (through the donations from 105 different backers) with 10 days left to go in the campaign. “When we launched the campaign we had no idea of the response we would garner. We are truly grateful to have the support of a strong fan base,” says Mike Walbert of SMKA. “We hope other independent, hip-hop artists looking to create new and creative projects look to kickstarter – and other fan funding platforms – as an alternative path to labels and/or sponsors. We haven’t seen any hip-hop artists, in our demographic, attempt to use kickstarter, but we think it could be a viable option for talented artists with an attentive fan base. We had to get over the initial hurdle of introducing and educating our fans to this the new platform, which many had never seen before.” The money raised will be used for the mixing, mastering and production costs associated with releasing the album.
A couple weeks ago we shot 3 album trailers that we will be releasing periodically until the Kickstarter campaign ends on March 12th. The video trailers feature 3 different songs off Young Scolla meets SMKA, and are intended to simply give our backers a glimpse into the project. Dustin Chambers shot the trailers in one day, while following Young Scolla around Atlanta.
